For the last two centuries, the name or mark of Eley has appeared on domestic flatware, fashion accessories and on both military and sporting ammunition. In Eley Cartridges Bill Harding traces the history of the Eley family name from its agricultural roots in Derbyshire, through its rise to fame as a mark of the leading London silversmiths and finally into the production of ammunition in London and Birmingham.

The inventive ability of its family founders aided by changes in technology is reflected in the advancement it afforded to both sportsmen and weapon designers and this book records their major achievements in the evolution of the cartridge industry. The author has had a lifelong interest in ammunition design, of which most of the major British innovations in this field were evolved or developed under the Eley name. His research has been assisted by numerous parties, including the current members of the Eley family, who had personal knowledge of various aspects of the company. Written with the full cooperation of the two companies - Eley Ltd and Eley Hawk Ltd - it contains many previously unpublished illustrations. Eley Cartridges is an in-depth history of Eley and the detailed appendices include the headstamps used on Eley cartridges, a list of metallic cartridges made by the company between 1885 and 1919 and a reference list of product names, powders and variants involved with the production of Eley cartridges.
