Please note that the following biographical information has been amended as the previous name/title and birth/death dates were incorrectly listed. All photos show natural silvering, toning. Some edge chips, crackle, tears, fading, creases. Some have been written on with fountain pen. Photos are irregular and do not have white borders. All photos are mounted on black scrapbooking page. This is an amazing find. Rare does not describe it. Photos of legendary South East Asian (East Indian) Cricket Batsman.
His obvious skill set with the bat. Ranjitsinhji scored 24,692 runs at an average of 56.37, the highest career average of a batsman based mainly in England until Geoffrey Boycott retired in 1986. He also scored 72 centuries thanks Wikipedia!
Ranjitsinhji was also a Maharajah and despite set backs (like asthma, the loss of an eye, obesity) he still suited up for Sussex in the 1920s. Photos of him are museum pieces so don't expect to find anything like this again.
The large group picture of him in a suit is a 4x6 gelatin silver circa 1904. His name is incorrectly spelled beneath him in fountain pen. It is not assumed to be his own handwriting! There is also action pictures of him in cricket regalia (I believe wearing a Sussex cap). His name is spelled out in cursive (correctly) but again, not assuming it is his script. Other photos include young men at English football and high jump (the names are sometimes penned in on the photos) The high jumper is credited with a leap of 6' 10. There is also images of a running race, clergymen, a Scotsman at golf, and other miscellania.
